Maggid was founded in 2006 by Nicolaas Cottenie (violin) and Jonas De Rave (accordeon) as a traditional klezmer duo. After some years of studying the genre, the group was enlarged to be a quartet, with a complete rhythm section consisting of Ruben Lamon on double bass, and Robbe Kieckens on percussion.

Today the quartet brings a personal mix of original compositions and modern interpretations of Jewish melodies from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Maggid is dynamic interplay with much improvisation, but always fed by the rich musical traditions from Eastern Europe or the Middle East, Turkish and Arab.

In 2011, Maggid, at the "Mosche Beregovski Award for Klezmer Ensemble" in Munich, won the Jury Award, and the "Publikumspreis".

On Februari 3rd 2012, 20:00h, Maggid's first album will be recorded live at De Werf in Bruges. If you'd like to be there, send a mail to info@maggid.be.
